Blocks of deep blue, sky blue, ivory and striped cream form the center of this kilim, with a few panels showing flashes of red and rose in the blue. A wide border of stepped triangles and small diamonds in brown, taupe, ivory and pale blue surrounds the patchwork, giving the rug a framed, gallery-like layout. The blocks vary in size and are set slightly off a strict grid, so the center feels pieced together by hand rather than measured out.
Made by hand in Turkey from wool reclaimed from older kilims, it was rewoven into this mix of modern blocks and traditional border motifs. It measures 10'3" x 12'10" (313 x 391 cm) and is roughly 5 mm thick, suited to a large living room, a dining room for eight or a king bedroom. It weighs about 23 kg (51 lbs). Being a flatweave, it has no pile to trap crumbs under a dining table, and a quick suction-only vacuum handles daily dust.
The blend of old and new makes it a good match for eclectic, transitional, coastal and modern rustic rooms, and it sits well with natural wood and cream textiles. A blue velvet armchair or a shelf of white ceramics would echo the central panels nicely. A cheerful centerpiece with plenty of detail.
