A grid of rectangular blocks in denim, indigo, sky blue and ivory makes up the center of this kilim, each block streaked with lighter lines and a few touches of red. Around the patchwork runs a wide taupe and olive border with sawtooth triangles in pale blue and chocolate brown, giving the piece a strong, framed shape. Small stepped diamond motifs dot the outer border between the triangles, and the blocks in the field are slightly different sizes, so the patchwork looks pieced together by hand rather than ruled.
It was made by hand in Turkey from reclaimed wool taken from older kilims and rewoven into this contemporary patchwork design. It measures 10'1" x 12'10" (307 x 390 cm) and is about 5 mm thick. Use it in a large living room, under a dining table for eight or in a primary bedroom. It weighs about 23 kg (51 lbs). As a flatweave, it has no pile to snag chair legs, and turning it around once or twice a year spreads out the wear.
The blue tones suit coastal, modern rustic, bohemian and eclectic interiors, and they work well with white walls, natural wood and leather. A tan leather sofa and an indigo throw would frame the center grid nicely. A characterful rug that blends tradition with a modern grid.
