Broad, wavy bands of black, dark brown and grey sweep across a pale beige field, rising and dipping like ridgelines or layers of rock. Some bands are thick and solid, others thin and broken, and the uneven spacing gives the composition an organic, landscape-like quality. The darkest black bands gather toward the lower half, so the rug feels heavier at one end, like the base of a hillside.
The kilim was handwoven in Turkey from wool salvaged from older kilims and rewoven into this abstract modern design. At 10'2" x 13'10" (310 x 421 cm) and about 5 mm thick, it covers a large living room, an open-plan lounge or the floor beneath a dining table for eight. It weighs about 25 kg (55 lbs). With no pile, it sits close to the floor so furniture stays level, and a pad underneath keeps it from shifting.
The monochrome palette and flowing lines suit modern, minimalist, Japandi and organic modern interiors, and it pairs well with travertine, boucle and dark wood. Placing the darker end under a sofa and the lighter end toward a window lets the bands lead the eye across the room. It could also hang as a large piece of textile art.
