Staggered blocks of black, charcoal, grey and ivory stripes shift across the width of this kilim, stepping slightly out of line from one column to the next. The result is a layered color block design that feels both orderly and relaxed, with the pale beige sections giving the darker bands room to breathe. Seen from a distance the offset blocks almost look like piano keys or stacked bricks, and the deep black reads clean against the lighter ground.
Woven by hand in Turkey from wool reclaimed from older kilims, it has been rewoven into this contemporary striped composition. It measures 10'2" x 13'8" (310 x 416 cm) and is roughly 5 mm thick, a good size for a large living room, an open-plan lounge or under a dining table for eight. It weighs about 25 kg (55 lbs). Its flat, pile-free surface stays put under heavy sofas, and an underlay helps the edges sit tight.
The black and neutral palette is a natural match for modern, industrial, minimalist and Scandinavian rooms, and it works well with black metal, leather and pale wood. Concrete or white walls and a single charcoal sofa will let the offset blocks set the rhythm of the space. A strong graphic rug that is still easy to live with.
