Small black and ivory squares form a checkerboard across this kilim, broken by vertical columns where the pattern shifts to beige, rust red and soft pink. The colored columns run the full length of the rug like ribbons, adding warmth and rhythm to the crisp monochrome grid. There are three of these columns, spaced across the width, and within them the red squares appear at irregular intervals, so the rhythm never quite settles into a strict repeat. The black reads almost as a deep charcoal brown in places.
The rug was handwoven in Turkey from wool reclaimed from older kilims and rewoven into this modern check design. At 10'5" x 14'0" (318 x 426 cm) and roughly 5 mm thick, it fits a large living room, a family room or under a dining table for eight. It weighs about 26 kg (57 lbs). Its flat surface lets chairs slide out from the table without snagging, and rotating it now and then keeps traffic wear even.
The graphic grid suits modern, eclectic, mid-century and industrial interiors, and the touches of red pair well with warm wood and leather. It also works well in a home office or playroom, where its pattern hides everyday wear. Black-framed chairs or a red lamp would underline the contrast. A lively, playful rug that still feels structured.
