Twelve rectangular panels make up the field of this patchwork kilim, set in a neat grid of three across and four down. Each panel carries its own motif, from crosses and stepped diamonds to scrolling S-shapes, arches and H-shaped figures, worked in powder blue, slate grey, dark brown and ivory. Narrow banded strips separate the panels like the seams of a quilt. Some panels are packed with small figures while others hold a few larger ones, so the eye keeps moving across the grid.
The rug was handwoven in Turkey from wool reclaimed from older kilims, then rewoven into this sampler-style design. It measures 10'3" x 14'1" (313 x 428 cm) and is about 5 mm thick, large enough for a spacious living room, under a dining table for eight or across a king bedroom. It weighs about 25 kg (55 lbs). Rotating it now and then spreads wear across the panels, and regular vacuuming keeps the busy pattern crisp.
The cool, muted palette and varied motifs suit eclectic, transitional, modern farmhouse and bohemian interiors, and the busy pattern is forgiving in high-traffic rooms. Plain furniture in grey, cream or weathered wood works best beside it. Every panel gives the eye something new to find.
