Broad bands of slate and denim blue cross the length and width of this flatweave, forming a grid of large rectangular windows. Each window is filled with streaky ivory, sand and pale blue, woven so the colors flicker and blur at the edges like brushwork. The result reads as a soft, painterly plaid rather than a crisp check. The windows run three across and about seven deep, a large scale that keeps the pattern relaxed in a big room.
The rug was handwoven in Turkey from wool reclaimed from older kilims, which was unravelled and rewoven into this new design. It measures 10'2" x 14'0" (311 x 426 cm) and is about 5 mm thick, so it lies flat and stays easy to roll. The size suits a large living room, a dining area with a table for eight or a king bedroom. It weighs roughly 25 kg (55 lbs). Routine care is simple: vacuum without the beater bar and spot clean with a damp cloth as needed.
Its calm blues and sandy neutrals work well in modern, coastal, Scandinavian and transitional rooms, especially next to white walls and pale oak. Add a slipcovered sofa in natural linen and a few denim or chambray cushions to carry the blues upward. A quiet but characterful base for a big space.
