Rectangular panels in rich blue, ivory and striated cream are stacked in a checkerboard of blocks at the center of this kilim, some woven solid and others with fine stripes or speckled tones. Around them runs a wide border of stepped triangles and small diamonds in taupe, dark brown, ivory and pale blue, which frames the patchwork like a mat around a picture. The blues range from a bright cornflower to a deeper denim, so the checkerboard has a lively, shifting quality rather than a flat repeat.
Woven by hand in Turkey, the rug uses wool reclaimed from older kilims that has been rewoven into this new design. It measures 10'2" x 14'3" (310 x 434 cm) and is roughly 5 mm thick, a fit for a large living room, a king bedroom or a dining room for eight. It weighs about 26 kg (57 lbs). With no pile, it lets dining chairs slide in and out freely, and a full-size pad keeps such a large rug from rippling.
Mixing traditional border motifs with a modern block field, it suits transitional, eclectic, modern rustic and coastal interiors. The blue panels pair well with natural wood, rattan and crisp white textiles. A pale linen sofa and a few indigo cushions would let the central blocks become the focus of the room.
