10x14 Handwoven Blue Striped Kilim Rug - 51710

A broad column of soft blue runs down the center of this kilim, and from both sides horizontal stripes of ivory, grey, brick red, brown and pale blue reach toward it, some stopping short and others breaking into the blue. The irregular, slightly frayed edges where the stripes meet the center give the design a loose, abstract energy. The blue itself is not flat but varies from denim to a paler sky tone, and a few dark navy lines punctuate the stripes, sharpening the rhythm along both sides.

The rug was woven by hand in Turkey from wool reclaimed from older kilims and rewoven into this modern striped layout. At 10'1" x 13'11" (308 x 423 cm) and about 5 mm thick, it suits a large living room, an open-plan space or the area under a dining table for eight. It weighs about 25 kg (55 lbs). Being a flat, pile-free weave, it lets dining chairs glide in and out easily, and a quick vacuum without the rotating brush is all the routine care it needs.

The mix of blue with touches of red suits eclectic, coastal, mid-century and contemporary rooms, and it works well with navy, white and warm wood. A teak sideboard and a rust-colored cushion or two would echo the warmer stripes. A relaxed, colorful rug for everyday living.
