A thin ivory zigzag line traces a frame inside the edges of this kilim, enclosing a streaked field of blue, slate, teal and charcoal. Within the frame sit five small clusters of ivory and taupe diamonds, spaced like the dots on a die, which give the abstract, watery background a quiet focal rhythm. Each cluster is made of four little diamonds arranged in a cross, and the darker horizontal streaks running through the ground make the field look almost like rippling water or weathered slate.
It was woven by hand in Turkey from wool reclaimed from older kilims and rewoven into this minimal modern design. At 11'10" x 14'6" (360 x 442 cm) and about 5 mm thick, it is an oversized rug for a great room, an open-plan living and dining space or a large dining room. It weighs about 30 kg (66 lbs), enough to stay put in most rooms, though a pad adds grip and cushioning. With no pile to trap dirt, it is easy to keep with regular vacuuming.
The cool, shifting tones suit contemporary, coastal, organic modern and Scandinavian interiors, and the sparse motifs keep it calm in a big room. It pairs well with pale oak, linen and stone. A long, low sofa in oatmeal or white lets the five diamond clusters stay visible around it.
