Rectangular panels of black, charcoal and ivory stripes are pieced together across this kilim, with the stripes running horizontally in some blocks and vertically in others. The changing directions create a lively basket-weave effect, while the restricted palette keeps the overall look clean and graphic. The panels vary in size, from narrow strips to broad blocks, and some of the ivory stripes carry tiny dotted or ticked details, so the patchwork rewards a closer look even though it reads as simple stripes from afar.

The rug was woven by hand in Turkey from wool salvaged from older kilims and rewoven into this striped patchwork. It measures 9'1" x 12'0" (278 x 366 cm) and is about 5 mm thick. It is a good size for a living room, a dining area for six to eight or a primary bedroom. It weighs about 19 kg (42 lbs). The flat construction means no pile to crush under furniture, and a rug pad helps keep the edges aligned on a slick floor.

The monochrome palette suits modern, industrial, Scandinavian and contemporary rooms, and it pairs easily with black metal, white walls and natural wood. The busy stripes also hide everyday wear in a well-used room. A cognac leather chair or a few rust cushions would add a single warm note. Practical, graphic and simple to style.
