Twelve square panels are set in a grid across this kilim, and each one holds a different geometric motif: crosses, hooks, vase shapes, letter-like forms, starbursts and checks. The palette is a mix of slate blue, charcoal, grey and ivory, so the varied panels still read as one calm, cohesive surface. Narrow bands of small repeating motifs separate the panels, and a few touches of light blue and tan appear in individual squares, so the grid works like a sampler of weaving patterns laid side by side.

The rug was handwoven in Turkey from wool reclaimed from older kilims and rewoven into this sampler-style patchwork. It measures 9'4" x 12'0" (285 x 365 cm) and is about 5 mm thick. It suits a living room, a dining area for six to eight or a primary bedroom. It weighs about 20 kg (44 lbs). Flat and without pile, it is easy to keep with regular vacuuming, and rotating it now and then balances the wear across the panels.

The muted, detailed pattern fits eclectic, global, modern rustic and transitional rooms, and it pairs well with leather, dark wood and textured fabrics. A plain charcoal sofa or a dark wood bookcase gives the busy grid a calm frame. Each panel invites a closer look, like a collection of small textiles.
