A single shade of soft slate blue covers this kilim, with no pattern beyond the gentle tonal shifts and fine horizontal ribbing of the weave. In some areas the blue turns slightly greener or greyer, and a faint lighter line crosses near one end, which gives the surface a natural, handmade depth. Along the edges the color deepens a touch, giving the rug a barely visible frame.
Woven by hand in Turkey, it was made from wool salvaged from older kilims and rewoven into this plain design. The rug measures 9'1" x 11'11" (278 x 362 cm) and is about 5 mm thick, so it lies flat under sofas, chairs and beds. Use it in a living room, under a dining table for six to eight or in a main bedroom. It weighs about 19 kg (42 lbs). With no pile, chairs pull in and out easily, and turning the rug now and then keeps the color even where sunlight falls.
The calm blue suits coastal, Scandinavian, minimalist and contemporary rooms, and it works as a quiet base for patterned cushions and throws. Try it with a sand-colored sofa, white oak and a few ochre accents for a gentle contrast. A versatile solid rug with real texture.
