Angled bands sweep across this kilim in orange, slate blue, grey, dusty pink, brown and sand, layered so the surface resembles a horizon or stacked layers of rock. Several broad orange stripes pull the eye across the field, while thinner dark wedges add depth between the lighter bands. A strip of brighter blue runs along the bottom edge and a rust red wedge sits at the top corner, so the two ends feel slightly different, and the pale grey and ivory slivers in between keep the palette airy.
The rug was woven by hand in Turkey from wool reclaimed from older kilims and rewoven into this abstract composition. It measures 9'4" x 12'0" (284 x 365 cm) and is about 5 mm thick. It suits a living room, a family room or the space under a dining table seating six to eight. It weighs about 20 kg (44 lbs). With no pile, it lies flat enough for chairs to slide in and out, and rotating it every season helps the colors wear evenly.
The mix of warm and cool tones works in modern, mid-century, contemporary and eclectic interiors, and it pairs nicely with grey sofas and walnut. Burnt orange or blush accents on a nearby chair would draw out the warmer bands. Each band is a little different, so it reads like a piece of art on the floor.
