Broad horizontal bands alternate between rust orange and grey blue on this kilim, and each band is filled with small stepped geometric motifs in sand, olive and terracotta. Fine vertical lines show faintly across the surface, adding a soft grid that gives the design an aged, textured look. The motifs link together like a chain of hooked shapes, and darker olive and charcoal bands sit between the main colors, so the rug moves from warm to cool and back again several times along its length.
Woven by hand in Turkey, the rug uses wool recovered from older kilims and rewoven into this banded layout. It measures 8'11" x 12'0" (273 x 366 cm) and is about 5 mm thick. It suits a living room, a dining table for six to eight or a primary bedroom. It weighs about 19 kg (42 lbs). Being a flatweave, it lets chairs slide without catching, and a light spot clean takes care of most spills.
The warm and cool contrast works in bohemian, Southwestern, eclectic and modern rustic interiors, and it pairs nicely with leather, terracotta and woven textures. The busy surface is also forgiving of everyday wear. A slate blue sofa or burnt orange curtains would let one band lead the room. A rich, layered rug with an old-world feel.
